Free Math Professional Learning Opportunities

Some amazing research has come out in the last 10 years or so in the area of Mathematics. It can be difficult to keep up by reading books and articles. There are some great virtual professional development opportunities currently available in the area of Mathematics education. Here's some of my favorites that you should fully take advantage of while you can:

• NCTM's 100 Days of Professional Learning - In celebration of NCTM's centennial year and to support the math education community, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is putting on 100 webinars by amazing minds and authors in Mathematics Education. These began on April 1st and continue through October 15th. All webinars are at 7:00pm EST. Webinars are recorded and all recordings and resources are available on the website as well as links to register for upcoming webinars. There are sessions for all levels including Elementary, Secondary and General Interest.
• Virtual Math Summit 2020 - Each year Christina Tondevold, The Recovering Traditionalist, organizes a Virtual Math Summit. This year the summit will be August 3-5, 2020. You can register for free and view the sessions live as well as view the recorded sessions through August 10, 2020. After that all sessions go inside of her members Build Math Minds paid site. This is geared toward elementary math teachers and administrators. She has 23 speakers lined up!
• Education Week - Education Week has a collection of webinars on mathematics. You can view recordings from previous webinars and download the resources right from their site.
• BEESS Portal: Professional Development Alternatives - PDAs are free for online courses for Florida educators. There are both facilitated and independent study courses. These are vetted and full of research and practical activities. While there are courses on a variety of topics to help educators increase their ability to respond to the needs of students with disabilities, for our purposes we'll focus on the math opportunities. Differentiating Mathematics Instruction is a facilitated course in D2L learning management system worth 30 inservice credits. Math Difficulties, Disabilities, and Dyscalculia is an independent study course worth 7-8 inservice points depend on district. In the state of Florida both of these count toward the ESE Renewal Requirement (SB 1108).
• CPALMS - This is another free resource for Florida educators. There are self-paced PD courses in lots of different areas, including Mathematics. They range from Elementary to Secondary and even offer courses for Access Points (alternate standards).
