From Access to Empowerment: Key Updates in UDL Version 3.0
The release of the UDL framework version 3.0 by CAST on July 30, 2024, introduced several updates and shifts compared to version 2.2. The ultimate goal of the framework has even shifted.
In version 2.2 the goal was to create expert learners who are purposeful and motivated, resourceful and knowledgeable, strategic and goal-directed.
In version 3.0 the goal of UDL is learner agency that is purposeful and reflective, resourceful and authentic, strategic and action oriented.
Getting to expert learners seemed like an endpoint to many, which can seem at odds with the underlying idea that learning is never finished. If learning is a never ending pursuit, learner agency in one’s own journey is more actionable and in-line with the purpose of the framework.
Primary differences between the two versions:
1. Increased Emphasis on Equity and Inclusion
Version 3.0: Places a stronger focus on equity, access, and inclusion. The language around these concepts has been updated to reflect more inclusive practices and to address systemic barriers more directly.
2. Revised Terminology and Definitions
Version 3.0: Increases the focus on the role identity and belonging play in student success.
3. Integration of Learner Agency and Identity
Version 3.0: Significantly elevates the importance of learner agency and identity. It encourages educators to not only provide access but also empower students to take control of their learning.
4. New Focus on Well-being and Relationships
Version 3.0: Encourages the design of environments that promote safety, trust, and belonging, and highlights the importance of supportive relationships between learners and educators.
6. Alignment with Modern Research
Version 3.0: Reflects the latest research in neuroscience, learning sciences, and educational equity. There is more evidence-based rationale behind each guideline and checkpoint, aligning with contemporary studies on how people learn.
7. Practical Application and Examples
Version 3.0: Provides more specific examples and strategies for educators to use, making the framework more accessible and easier to implement in diverse classrooms.
Which Checkpoints are new?
Version 3.0 includes 6 new considerations (previously called checkpoints)! Two new considerations for each principle: Engagement, Representation and Action & Expression.
